Make It In Minutes: Crayon Creatures

by Angel on July 20, 2009

CrayonCreatsmToday on Make It In Minutes Monday we’re making Crayon Creatures! This is a chipboard twist on a favorite kid craft and a great project to make with your kids.

With a little help melting the crayons, your kids can make lots of different Crayon Creatures to play with in just a few minutes!

Materials
chipboard animals value kit (TCC)
crayons
crayon sharpener
paper plate or waxed paper
cardstock, any color
pen or pencil
scissors
craft sticks
craft glue
googly eyes, self adhesive

1. Trace around your chipboard on a piece of cardstock. Cut out the shape with scissors and set aside. Later we’ll use this for the backing.

2. Use your crayon sharpener to make lots of crayon shavings in whatever colors in want to use. I used a blue and a green sparkly crayon.

3. Place your chipboard animal on a paper plate, then arrange your crayon shavings on top.

Parent assistance required for this step!
4. Carefully place the plate in the microwave, and turn the microwave on a low/defrost setting until the crayons are melted. This took about 2 minutes in my microwave. Let the creatures completely cool before handling.

5. Now peel off the backing and stick a craft to the back in the middle. Apply the paper shape you cut out earlier and trim if needed. Add googly eyes to the front. All done!

Additional Tips:

  • You can also use a grater or a vegetable peeler to make crayon shavings, but I recommend using an old one you do not need anymore.
  • It’s can be a little more difficult to arrange the pieces along the edges. You can just color the edges of the chipboard before adding the shavings if you want, or just use a thick layer of shavings so they spread to the edges while melted.
  • You can make these a little sturdier by putting a couple of drops of craft glue on each side of the stick.

What a cute creative idea for children to make. I would have never thought of shaving down crayons for a project. These are adorable. Thanks for sharing!
