If you didn’t know, we are quickly approaching the anniversary of the passing of Bob Keeshan. Now if you don’t think you’re familiar with that name, how about if we share with you his stage name—Captain Kangaroo. In January of 2004, Keeshan passed away, yet the many lessons he shared with us as young children are still having an effect upon us as parents of yet another generation of children…
Now when it comes to Keeshan, I remember getting up in time to make couch “forts” and run around in my PJs while watching Saturday morning cartoons and such. Without a doubt as a very young child, among the favorite shows I enjoyed was watching Captain Kangaroo. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to the chaos that his playground afforded young viewers, but there within was the subtle magic. You see, Keeshan spent time helping kids on the show, or in our living rooms, just simply “create.”
“Play,” the late Keeshan stated, “is the work of children. It’s very serious stuff. And if it’s properly structured in a developmental program, children can blossom.” So little did I know that for an hour while watching, I was actually learning.
As evidenced by many studies done by the Hobby Industry Association, kids learn more when they are allowed time to create. So that is why we here at Total Class Creative believe so much in our products and the vein of creativity they provide. Not only do these kits provide an excuse for mothers and daughters to ink out a time for play during the week, but the kits also allow mothers and daughters alike to do a little “work of the children.” This time helps expand and open our minds to the opportunities that are out there for each one of us…
